Every week at Orlando Music News, the site will highlight a local band. A good local band. This week: Junior Bruce.
Hailing from Deland (not Orlando!) and claiming former members of Bloodlet, Hope & Suicide, and Asphalt, Junior Bruce’s evolution over the past couple of years has been arduously slow – the band seems to go through phases of complete inactivity followed by months where it seems like they’re the house band at Will’s – but endlessly rewarding. They first lumbered onto the Central Florida scene as one of the most heavy and explosive metal bands in the area, and have only gotten better with time. With a sound that’s drunkenly loose and decidedly punk-tinted, Junior Bruce is not the band to check out if you’re looking for complex, arpeggiated scales resting upon 9/3 tempos with triple-kick-drum blast beats. They are, however, the best metal band in Central Florida, and certainly your best bet for gut-punchingly heavy, doomy music that roars off the stage with hostility to spare.
Junior Bruce plays Back Booth on Wednesday, March 23, with Weedeater and Zoroaster.
Just the facts:
When formed: Not sure that we have fully formed yet. I like to think we are still in the womb sucking our barely developed thumb. I think we first got together and called it a band in august of 2009 though.
Band members’ names & instruments:
- Tom “Chowder” Crowther: bass
- Sneaky Pete Wellmaker: drums
- Bryan “Bezus” Raymond: guitar
- Death Metal Dan: guitar
- Scott Angelocos: voice
Currently available releases:
We have a few demos that we sometimes have when we play shows. Good luck finding anyone by the merch to purchase one. Your best bet is to look at the bar for one of us or behind the club in the van. Better yet just go through our unattended boxes of stuff and steal one or twelve.
April 23: Will’s Pub
May 28: Will’s Pub, with Royal Thunder
Then we take some time to finish our full-length.
Describe your sound:
Heavy metal wrecking ball.
Any big news to share?
Our drummer cut off the tip of his finger recently. It was pretty gross.
1) What has been your most memorable show so far?
We played Backbooth with Pentagram. Was freakin awesome.
2) Which local band is your favorite one to play a show with?
Which ever one does promotion. We are useless.
