Fresh Wax: 6-27-09 (Seattle Weekly)

Woah! All that talk in last week’s post about the impending collapse of this vinyl boom because of reduced capacity at the pressing plants? Apparently, nobody told the record labels about it, because there was a ton of vinyl goodness that dropped this week. Don’t forget, it’s very hot out there, so don’t buy records via mail order unless you have to. Plus, you should support your local retail shops, as they’re taking a huge, non-refundable gamble to get this wax in stock for you in the first place.

The biggest beast to fall from the heavens this week was Voltaic, the new live (or, at least sorta live) album from Björk. Given the lavish vinyl treatment given to the singles that came from Volta, it shouldn’t be surprising that the packaging onVoltaic is above and beyond. There are two vinyl versions coming out; the “regular” edition will consist of two 200g LPs along with a CD of that music. The hefty deluxe version will have those same two 200g LPs and CD, along with a bonus CD of remixes and two DVDs with a full Paris concert, a performance in Reykjavik and the videos from the Volta album.

On the reissue front, the biggest news, in my opinion, is the 180g LP reissue/remaster of the Flaming Lips’ nouveau-classic Soft Bulletinalbum; it comes with a CD of three non-album cuts. Also this week, there were a new batch of reissues from the Island vaults, including Tom Waits’SwordfishtrombonesKimono My House by Sparks, and, praise the Lord, Nightclubbing by Grace Jones. Oddly, there’s another classic Island (or at least sorta-Island) album, Follow the Leaderby Eric B. & Rakim, hitting the shelves, but it’s being put out by the fine folks at 4 Men With Beards. As a complement to recent deluxe CD reissues of early R.E.M., the remastered versions of Murmur andReckoning will also be available on 180g vinyl, and, thanks to the Hi Records catalog being in the able hands of indie label Fat Possum, you’ll also be seeing 180g remastered reissues of several excellent Al Green albums.
